(concept) Instagram Experience, an Instagram app for tablets

As a hobby project, I made a concept for a tablet only (landscape) Instagram app. Please don’t mind the Nexus 10 tablet (which I didn’t make, but you can find it here), or the outdated Android version. I didn’t design this with a platform in mind, it’s just to show off the experience. The app icons I used (you can find them here) are outdated compared to the ones used in the official Instagram app. As you can see, there is no way to take a picture, because I think it’s not something you should do with a 10 inch tablet. This app is a showcase of all the great pictures on Instagram.

When Facebook bought you in 2012 for about 1 billion dollars I hoped they would leave you alone. Oh and they did, literally. You didn’t change that much over the past two years. You didn’t grow up, but the rest of the (mobile) world did.

Time to get rid of passwords? Not so fast

Read that NY times article about passwords? Well, it’s pretty interesting. I actually don’t hate passwords, but that’s because I’m not using them correctly. I don’t change them that often and I certainly don’t have a different password for every account. Of course my online bank-account password is not the same as the one I use for Twitter, but if someone obtains my “main” password, they will have access to a lot of my accounts.

Wanneer ik een aantal jaar terug de trein pakte, waren die Metro/Spits bakken altijd leeg. Als je een eigen, versche krant wilde hebben, moest je er vroeg bij zijn. Op elk tafeltje lag er wel een. Tegenwoordig zie ik midden op de dag nog wel eens kranten in die bakken liggen. Ook 's ochtends lijken mensen minder geïnteresseerd te zijn in gratis nieuws op papier. Misschien ligt het aan de trein die ik pak, maar de meeste kranten zijn op de bovenverdieping van de dubbeldekker te vinden.

The manipulated mind of a gamer

I remember the first ever moving images I saw of Ubisoft’s Paris during the French Revolution. From that moment on, I was hyped for Assassin’s Creed Unity. A one minute video showing the interior of a luxury room, then into a dirty, empty, battered street. When the camera moves around the corner, in the distance, a hooded man stands on a rooftop. Every gamer knows: Ubisoft, hooded man, rooftop: this is Assassin’s Creed. As the camera zooms out and we see that the assassin is looking down on square full of people, we know why the streets are empty. Everyone is on that square, gathered around one of the most cruel execution machines ever made. We see a close-up of the guillotine’s blade falling down, knowing somebody lost his life in front of a cheering crowd.

Nexus 9 review

In 2012, the Nexus 7 shook up the (tablet) world. A year later, the second model did the same. The 2013 model would still be a great deal today, so it’s somewhat unfortunate that Google stops selling it. The Google/HTC made Nexus 9 comes in its place, but this tablet, as the name suggests, has a 9 inch (8.9) inch display. Pre-2014 Nexus devices were always relatively cheap compared to other products. But that changes this year. Both the Nexus 6 and 9 are just as expensive as the competitors’ offerings. Google is trying to take the Nexus program to a more premium level, but how does it work out?

The tweet above means something like: “email will never die.” But I actually wasn’t sure about that. I replied to myself (which I do way too often): “Save this and prove me wrong in 10 years.” 10 years is a long time, but after using Inbox by Gmail I’m sure email will still exist in 10 years.

RETRY is a hard game that isn't as frustrating as that other one

It's always interesting to see something new from a company that's mainly built around one brand. Rovio made a lot of games, but most of them were Angry Birds related. I don't know if the formula doesn't work anymore, but the hype from the beginning is gone. It must hurt them to see that one guy conquered the world with a game (about a bird), without a huge marketing budget.

To find the next thing, Rovio set up a team called LVL11 to experiment with new games. The first outcome called RETRY has been released and when you start playing it, you might think of - exactly - Flappy Bird.

Nooit meer betalen voor mobiel internet

Deze visie omvat geen mogelijke nadelen :)

De telecommarkt is gek. Heel veel mensen betalen (te) veel voor hun mobiele abonnement en prijzen van telefoons zijn veel hoger dan dat de losse componenten waard zijn. Daarnaast is de dekking van 4G nog steeds niet heel Nederland bij sommige providers en er zijn plekken waar zelfs helemaal geen bereik is. Een telefoontje in het buitenland kost je een vermogen.

Hoe gaaf zou het zijn als je nooit meer voor mobiel internet hoeft te betalen? Het kan. Een Amerikaanse provider die gratis internet en belminuten aanbiedt in ruil voor het bekijken van reclames komt binnenkort naar Nederland. Maar het kan ook anders.

De telecommarkt zou genationaliseerd, misschien zelfs gecontinentaliseerd kunnen worden. Miljoenen Nederlanders kijken om acht uur het journaal op Nederland 1 en toch betaalt het grootste gedeelte van die mensen niet direct aan de NOS. De publieke omroepen worden betaald van belastinggeld en ledenbijdragen, maar het kijk- en luistergeld bestaat al lang niet meer. Mobiel internet en telefonie zouden ook uit belastinginkomsten betaald kunnen worden. Zie het als Rijkswaterstaat die de wegen aanlegt en beheert. De infrastructuur is er al en conflicten tussen bijvoorbeeld KPN en gemeentes over plaatsingen van masten zijn veel eenvoudiger op te lossen. Daarnaast zouden in steden routers van mensen gebruikt kunnen worden om een groot netwerk op te zetten.

Dankzij die mooie Europese unie van ons passeer je zonder enig oponthoud de landsgrenzen. Voor telecom geldt dat zeker niet. Prijzen zijn absurd hoog in het buitenland, terwijl het dezelfde eentjes en nulletjes zijn. Gelukkig gaat daar verandering in komen, maar het zou nog mooier zijn als je ook in het buitenland niks hoeft te betalen. Toeristen maken in landen (waar geen tolwegen zijn) ook gratis gebruik van het wegennet.

Iedereen wil graag overal op internet kunnen en de generatie die het niet doet, is aan het uitsterven. Zelfs al moet er apart belasting voor betaald worden, dan zal dat bedrag beduidend lager zijn dan de €40/50 per maand die velen nu betalen. Telefoons zelf moeten ook goedkoper worden, maar gelukkig zijn goedkopere telefoons met goeie specificaties in opkomst.

Paper and ink

Everything starts with a simple sheet of paper and a pen, whether it’s a child’s first doodle or its final exam. Every idea, drawing, song, map, letter, book and even this story shifts from the mental to the physical world by putting it down on (digital) paper. Humans have been using it for ages and are familiar with its form, physics and boundaries. Oh, and it’s also the inspiration for Google’s new design.

What you see is what you get

If you want to draw, pick a pencil and a piece of paper. It’s as easy as that. But what if you want to make a game or a website or a logo or…? There are so many tools today which simplify these difficult processes. And I love them.

Dankjewel Heracles

Dankjewel Heracles, gastvrije club die je bent. Alles heb je er aan gedaan om er een mooi feestje van te maken. In de week voorafgaand aan de wedstrijd tegen Ajax overleg gevoerd met de supporters en technische staf van Ajax. Tijdens die conferentie van Almelo ben je samen met Ajax tot een oplossing gekomen: salonremise. En wat heb je het toneelstukje mooi meegespeeld. Wat zogenaamde drugs- en vuurwerkhonden, iedereen  — zelfs oud-trainer Gertjan Verbeek — even fouilleren, in het interview met je coach voor de wedstrijd aangeven dat je volledig voor de winst zal gaan.

Maar toen, de vrije trap van Schöne. Die vloog er per ongeluk in, maar gelukkig bracht Cillessen je terug in de wedstrijd. De laatste 15, 20 minuten nog even rustig de bal rondspelen en vervolgens met z'n allen feest vieren. Je uiterst vriendelijke voorzitter Jan Smit deed ook vrolijk mee en bedankte de meegereisde Ajax supporters. Ajax kampioen, jullie veilig. Amsterdam blij, Almelo blij, iedereen blij.

Twitter is changing

I like Twitter because it's simple. It's open to the whole world, but somehow it also feels private to me, because you don't know who is actually seeing your Tweet. It evolved from a "now i'm eating/sleeping/fishing" platform into something so much bigger. It's the fastest way to spread news. I use it to stay up-to-date with news I care about, share cool things I found on the web, or just to give my quick opinion about something.

Beste Samsung, het oog wil ook wat

€ 699,99, dat is wat je betaalt voor de onlangs aangekondigde Samsung Galaxy S5. Voor zo'n prijs mag je heel wat verwachten en de telefoon heeft dan ook veel te bieden: de nieuwste processor, een full HD scherm, een 16 megapixel camera met snelle autofocus, een vingerafdrukscanner en zelfs een hartslagmeter. Daarnaast is de telefoon stof- en waterbestendig. Alles is van hoogstaande kwaliteit, behalve het design.

Goud voor Google

Wat is het toch weer genieten, die Olympische Spelen op tv. En hoewel ik meningen van anderen die de negativiteit benadrukken, respecteer, vind ik het toch vooral mooi om te zien hoe alle vertegenwoordigde landen er samen een groot evenement van maken. De Spelen zijn een poging om landen van over de hele wereld te verbroederen en alle problemen, die er ongetwijfeld zijn, even te vergeten.
